US Review: KARNEY “BETTER”

Anna Karney has been making great music for many years, performing across the United States and collaborating with many talented and notable artists. As a solo artist she has put out several singles and EPs, and now with her band KARNEY has released a new EP titled BETTER, a stunning collection of original new songs together with a remix, and a cover of “Ramble On,” one of Karney’s favorite Led Zeppelin songs.

Keeping her mind on social justice and positive messages, Anna Karney’s lyrical content offers a sardonic and sometimes straightforward approach to many of the issues facing people today, with a message of hope resonating throughout every song she writes. Inspiration, obsession, and constant chaos in the news are the motivators for her new songs. How can a social justice songwriter stay silent during these trying times? The answer is, she can’t. Despite this, the title song “Better” shifts focus to the positive and offers the listener an uplifting message of hope and courage.

The KARNEY band performs in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Pacific Northwest, and it is very easy for Anna Karney to remain inspired with the new players in the lineup around her. These include bassist Kevin White (The Chuck Prophet Band), guitarist Erik Smyth (Mo’fessionals, Too Short), and also returning on guitar James DePrato (The Chuck Prophet Band). Drummer Jeff Herrera remains the steady backbeat of the group, and horn section heavyweights include trumpet player Bill Ortiz (Santana, Tony Toni Tone) and Sax/Electric Bassoonist Paul Hanson (Bela Fleck, Billy Cobham). Anna Karney holds down guitar, various piano, organ and strings sounds, and lead and background vocals on all songs. With this all-star lineup each show is more exciting than the last.

KARNEY released her last album of original songs titled NO MERCY in 2018, which received broad national Radio airplay on Triple-A and Americana radio stations, and internationally as well. On that album as well as on previous releases, KARNEY has worked with producers and artists in the SF Bay Area such as Producer/engineer Mark Pistel (Michael Franti, Grace Jones, Chuck Prophet), Producer/Engineer Michael Rosen (Rancid, Tesla, Smashmouth, Santana, and Papa Roach), and Adam Munoz (Herbie Hancock, Dave Mathews, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Bell, Chester Thompson, and Lyle Lovett).

Anna Karney’s musical influences include Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Lennon, Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde, Fela Kuti, and Joni Mitchell. As an arranger, pianist, and guitarist, she has worked with artists such as George Clinton, Linda Perry, and Dennis Bovell. By night the KARNEY band rocks out at clubs and events, and by day Anna Karney is a choir director and guitar teacher in public schools. She has found a balance between creating her own new music and inspiring creativity and songwriting in teens. Some musicians might decide to quit their passion for more practical work, but Karney is only energized more by doing both.

Anna Karney has had a diverse musical career, having spent many years composing music for games such as Star Wars Galaxies, Monkey Island IV, Armed and Dangerous, several SimCity titles, Metal Dungeon, Death Jr., and many more. She has also added youth choral director to her list of musical endeavors, having received the esteemed “Dreamcatcher” Award from the Visual and Performing Arts division of the San Francisco Unified School District for her work as a choral teacher and conductor for middle and high school students, as well as her contribution to the furthering of music education in the San Francisco public school system.

Additionally, Anna Karney has scored ballet and modern dance pieces as an artist in residence at Mills College and San Francisco State University. This includes pieces for many contemporary dance world choreographers and dancers such as Edward Valela, Anna Sokolo, San Francisco Ballet School, Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, Oberlin Dance Collective, Richard Gibson and The Academy of Ballet, June Watanabe, Joe Goode, Lucas Hoving, Ed Mock, Janice Garret, Melissa Fenley, and many more. She also composed her Opus 1 Chaconne Sur Sept for nationally renowned contemporary music group Earplay Ensemble.

For Immediate Release – Long Beach, CA – MADD SCIENTIST is a music producer, songwriter, recording artist, open format DJ, and proud gentleman bachelor. Using the professional production software Cubase, MADD SCIENTIST produces hip hop, reggaeton, dancehall, and deep house music specifically for the night club setting. He spent years as an MC and promoter at various night clubs in downtown Long Beach, and evolved into a recording artist and DJ with his debut release Mass Appeal EP in 2016. MADD SCIENTIST has since developed an intimate familiarity with open format night club music, which he showcases on his exhilarating new release NEW DAY EP, available in stores and online August 14, 2020.

The NEW DAY EP is music for people who enjoy night club venues, VIP bottle service, and weekend day parties, and features an exciting mix of West Coast hip hop, reggaeton, and dancehall. “I love the atmosphere and intimacy of night clubs,” says MADD SCIENTIST, which shines through on tracks like “Madd Krazy,” “Take Flight feat. JTLR,” “Grinding Me (Gucci Girl),” and the way too hot for radio “You Nasty.”

MADD SCIENTIST musical influences include A Tribe Called Quest, Redman, Method Man, Erik Serman, Calvin Harris, Lil Wayne, and Lil Jon. The 2016 Mass Appeal EP that introduced MADD SCIENTIST to the scene featured the groundbreaking singles “Vegas Pool Party” and “Move It.” Following the success of “Vegas Pool Party” as a college radio anthem and the various night club remixes of “Move It,” MADD SCIENTIST released a second EP in 2016 named Scientific Evolution, which included the singles “Kiss Me with a Sound” and “SLTB.”  Notably, the “SLTB (Reggaeton Remix)” was the first official reggaeton release for MADD SCIENTIST.

The next MADD SCIENTIST release Long Journey Home was a compilation of songs that cater directly to the Long Beach open format DJ style, a mix of West Coast hip hop, reggaeton, and dancehall music. The cultural diversity of the city of Long Beach requires that DJs and promoters know a wide mix of musical styles and club fans. MADD SCIENTIST is also a frequent patron of the underground Belizean After Hours Party scene, which gives him more exposure to dancehall, reggae, Soca, and Afro-beat music.

MADD SCIENTIST received his formal music training at Long Beach City College with classes in music theory and studio production, and other musical peers include Tyga, Kid Ink, French Montana, Nicki Minaj, City Girls, Megan Thee Stallion, J Balvin, Ozuna, Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, Becky G, Stefflon Don, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Shaggy, Gyptian, DJ Marshmello, and DJ Mustard.

As a history junkie and Black Studies major at Long Beach State University, MADD SCIENTIST enjoys discovering the evolution of West African Music through the Caribbean, South America, and North America areas of the world (which he calls the “Music of the Enslaved” that has become the unofficial musical voice of the world), and bringing those influences and sounds to his music. MADD SCIENTIST maintains core beliefs in God, Pan-African Music, Hedonism, and the goodness of people.

MADD SCIENTIST plans to DJ and perform at night club venues around the world. “I specifically want to host a residency in a Las Vegas Night Club on a Friday Night,” he enthuses. “I consider Friday the night where you can truly be free to allow yourself to be hedonistic.” Ever the entrepreneur, MADD SCIENTIST also plans to create his own Fitness Brand. “I believe that fitness is the understanding and mastery of your physical body,” he says. “This is a lifelong endeavor towards understanding God’s creative process. I don’t consider myself religious, but I have a strong belief in spirituality, which starts with mastering the total extent of your personal physical body.”

“This has more in common with latter day King Diamond than anything else. This is horror metal with a very clear concept for each album. This one tells the tale of a father who summons Evil and the price he has to pay to the witch. If you like I am a huge Mercyful Fate/King Diamond fan this is a treat. You can always discuss the pros and cons of being this influenced/inspired by a band or artist but when it is done the way this is done I for one have no problems with it. This is very dramatic metal. This is one album you gotta sit back and listen to, to fully get the whole ambience of the story and music in connection. This one was a cool one.”  -Anders Ekdahl

The TRANSITORY EP is a collection of short stories, each one a first person narrative from a different speaker. With the stories woven over old school beats and instrumentation, every track features sampled monologues or dialogue with a mixture of live, sampled, and electronic instruments to create a nostalgic feeling that is simultaneously comforting yet unfamiliar. In addition to his own original tracks, DR CHRISPY worked with contributing artists to bring their own unique perspectives to the TRANSITORY EP, including The Stunt Man, Haji Mike, Med Dred, Synthapex, Psybolord, and Aeronexus.

Mefisto – Octagram CD

From GMR Music Group, the new MEFISTO album OCTAGRAM evolved into a concept album based on a dystopian lyrical ground fused with diabolical tunes of damnation. This time the band brought in Chaq Mol of the mighty Dark Funeral to do some guitar shredding on two songs, it resulted in pure armageddon riffs. An album more dark, heavy and brutal then it´s precursor. Expect no more or no less! MEFISTO is NOT a band for the masses.
