“You might expect an album from Alice Austin, who is known around the country for fronting Black Sabbitch, to be loaded with dense metallic music and a persistent dark pall. But, on GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA, Alice the artist in her own right shines through on twelve carefully crafted tracks that work hard to elicit exhilaration at any time of day. Our picks – the title tack, “Jellyfish” and “Saving My Tears.””

-OutOfThisWorldMusic.com

For Immediate Release – Los Angeles, CA – ALICE AUSTIN is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who showcases a full spectrum of stylistic leanings on her new album GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA. Set for release April 22, 2022, GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA is “a wild ride” as described by producer David Drouin, from the retro-alternative opening track “No Such Thing,” to the surfy vibe in “The Neighborhood,” to the spaghetti western riffs in “The Ward.”

Rich with layered instrumentation, this second full-length album from ALICE AUSTIN was artfully mixed and mastered by Timothy Phillips at Mercy Sound Studios. Besides being a melodic guitar-based rock album, GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA features a diverse collection of performances from Seth Campbell (mellotron and piano), Emily Garcia (violin), and Jon Persson (trumpet). The lyrical content of this collection of songs aims to be easy listening on the surface, with a depth that reaches out to its audience if they are willing to dive deeply into some pretty heavy messages about the love and the laws of physics, haunted guitars, mental illness, suicide, and telepathic communication.

Born in Vermont and currently living in Los Angeles, ALICE AUSTIN has written and performed hundreds of songs throughout her musical life. In addition to her solo career, she fronts Black Sabbitch, the Ozzy-endorsed all female Black Sabbath. She was also a founding member and songwriter of Vermont’s all female pop punk band Zola Turn in the early 2000’s, and later Queen Tangerine and Boston’s The Lavas.

To create her second full-length solo album, ALICE AUSTIN reached back to her New England roots and combined forces with Boston producer and musician David Drouin, who also plays guitar, bass, and sings backing vocals on the release. The inspiration for GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA came about after Austin sang backing vocals on Drouin’s production of the Cold Engines single “One of Us Now,” and the collaboration was so natural that Austin asked him to record a single with her. “The Ward” was their first completed song that set off an unstoppable momentum leading to 11 other tracks all written, produced, and recorded remotely within the next few months. As Alice as on tour with Black Sabbitch, she was also composing, writing lyrics, and listening to mixes of GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA tracks.

Alice Austin’s music career has taken her from her native Vermont to her adoptive Los Angeles–and nearly every place in between. Material she recorded and co-wrote with previous groups such as Boston incarnation The Lavas (2006-2009) and Vermont’s earliest all-female 90s powerhouse Zola Turn (Brick Red Records, 2000-2002) draws on a vast corpus including retro garage icons such as Shocking Blue and Jefferson Airplane, a peppering of 90s indie rock artist PJ Harvey, and the twangy delights of vintage country queen Wanda Jackson.

Her solo work also embraces these influences as she moves from country to indie to rock and back again on her self-produced and self-engineered debut album To A Star in the Yard, followed by her Left One in the Rain EP produced by Patrick Avalon, her singles “Cowboy Summer” and “Dirt and Helicopters” (both produced by Robb Torres), and her two most recent self-produced singles “Cirrus” and “Lookout Mountain.”

Many fans know ALICE AUSTIN as the lead singer of Black Sabbitch – a band with exactly one musical influence but a complex creative agenda: to embody the authenticity of formative 1970s metal, making blatant it’s latent feminine swagger by crowning themselves “the all-female Black Sabbath.” According to The New Times, Black Sabbitch is “redefining the cover band.” While touring with Black Sabbitch brings Alice all over North America and Europe to express the most extroverted and raucous aspects of her personality, her solo career continues to satisfy an intimate artistic expression that has only deepened through the polarity of her experiences.

The ALICE AUSTIN single “No Such Thing” is available digitally on March 25, 2022, followed by the release of her new album GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA on April 22, 2022.

-Let It Rock, DMME.net

Newcomer on the scene Goldish transports us to another place and time with their mystical, worldly, trap-ish Andromeda track, and that is itself backed by 140 dubwise legend Bukkha who brings us the trippy, psychedelic 80’s style track Space Coast Boogie. Then we get one of my own personal favorites here on this vibrantly wonderful new release, The Dragon, where El Diablo pays great respect to the old school, with hip hop legend Nim-1, and the last track being the impressive, and veritably ferocious bass tune Make A Wish, from Beat Kitty (featuring Annie Dolly on the vocals).”

MalLabel Music was founded in the underground warehouses and clubs of the Bay Area in 2008, right when the biggest waves of bass music and dubstep were beginning to break into the US mainstream. They cut their teeth as a grassroots independent label and have grown to represent international artists and some of the biggest names in west coast underground bass music.

Malleability is the name of the game at MalLabel; versatility and innovation has kept them at the forefront of the movement for the past ten years. They specialize in supporting established and emerging sincere artists who bring something fresh and exciting to the table, delivering the best of the best in underground bass worldwide.

Set for release March 4, 2022, the new MalLabel compilation SPACE OPERA brings together six new tracks from an impressive collection of MalLabel artists:

From a world in chaos, in a society more virtual than real, where bass has been outlawed and the future of the planet is uncertain, a new hope awakens.

In a crushing blow to the empire, illegal bass is being distributed furiously throughout the neo world underground, and the regime has lost control.

The Neo Noir Rebellion is spreading like wildfire. The galaxy is in turmoil as more and more people begin to spread underground bass transmissions, and the evil empire is helpless to stop it.  No matter how many transmissions they shut down, more arise.

Six Bass Warriors from different reaches of the galaxy have become forever intertwined in a series of events that only fate itself could have foretold, and will inadvertently find themselves forever altering the course of Bass history.

Illexxandra sets the mood in true operatic style with a thumping, cinematic glitch hop track that is as spooky as the empire itself! Announcing its presence with ominous solo french horns and eerie theremin-esque lead hooks reminiscent of an opera singer, this track is all vibe, all bass, and no fluff!

Cam Lasky drops a halftime DnB track whose intro sample mimics the roving eyes of the centurions from the original Battlestar Galactica, right before dropping into an absolutely fierce and unrelenting dark DnB masterpiece filled with a mystery and tension typical of his epic and cinematic production style.

Newcomer on the scene Goldish transports us to another place and time with a mystical, worldly, trap-ish tune filled with horns, flutes, and wubs a-plenty!

Meanwhile, 140 dubwise legend Bukkha departs from his usual sound to hit us with a trippy, psychedelic 80’s style track laced with synthwave-like arpeggios and deeeeep subs.

El Diablo gives a nod to the old school, with hip hop legend Nim-1 (formerly of Qbert’s FM-1 outfit) delivering epic freestyle lyricism punctuated by a fire-breathing screamo chorus hook that reminds you who is the original Dragon.

Beat Kitty drops a certifiably hyphy world bass tune featuring none other than Annie Dolly on the mic, dropping empowering female-powered lyrical witchcraft like no one else can. Filled with equal parts humor and ferocity, this track will keep you moving and singing along till the end!

US Review: DAN ASHLEY “OUT THERE”

Click Here to Listen to OUT THERE!

“Out There will be a real pleaser for long time fans while also offering a great gateway for newbies. Fans will likely hear notes of John Mellencamp, Tom Petty and others of the ilk here. The tender ballad “Lucky Stars” comes mid-album but Ashley’s back to rocking real quick with “Da Na Na Na Na,” an ode to the power chord (without power chords) that has an irresistible chorus that demands a sing along.”

-AntiMusic.com

Click Here to Listen to OUT THERE!

“Damn. I sure wish this guy were my newscaster. Turns out Dan Ashley, a television journalist and news anchor for ABC7/KGO-TV in San Francisco, also is quite the singer — and he proves it on Out There. This 11-track CD features Ashley’s slightly weathered yet instantly likable voice, a stellar band and passionate songs that encourage repeat listens and boast widespread appeal. Ashley delivers. No wonder he’s opened for everyone from Cheap Trick and Melissa Etheridge to REO Speedwagon, Rick Springfield and Patti LaBelle.”

-Sea of Tranquility

“From start to finish Out There takes you on a feel-good ride. You can hear Dan Ashley’s passion for making music and for bringing people together. Out There will fill you with nostalgia and provoke your thoughts in one listen. This is an album to watch out for and to listen to with the volume turned all the way up!”

-Vents Magazine

Dan Ashley is a man of tremendous experience and talents, and music is one of them. His solo album Out There presents 11 tracks firmly anchored in hard-driving rock and roll with masterful forays into lush ballads and Americana. In collaboration with legendary Concord-based producer/engineer/multiinstrumentalist Bill Bentley, Ashley offers a collection of mature, thought-provoking and playful songs.”

-Diablo Gazette

Click Here to Listen to The Morning Breezecast Interview with Dan Ashley on iHeart Radio!

Translated: “Down-to-earth music with a high degree of authenticity, played fresh and bold. “Da Na Na Na Na” is another one of those ‘ Springsteen’ rockers with a punch. “Feel The Heat” follows and the rhythm guitars drive the song along with pounding drums. “

Translated: “Dan Ashley’s debut for radio stations on the domestic American highways is exactly the right music to get from city to city. Thoughtful, but also engaging in the emotional moment.”

-Michael Haifl

Translated: “‘Lucky Stars’ surprises with its minimalist posture in a ballad with piano and smooth guitar; also the energetic rock with an interesting dose of power at the end of ‘Da Na Na Na Na‘ and the soulful ambience of Out There. The electric and acoustic elements are combined in a balanced way, giving space for Ashley’s voice to stand out.”

-Via Nocturna

“I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Out There, by Dan Ashley and it’s packed full of likely radio tracks. With hints of John Cougar and straight up radio rockers, Ashley is joined by Bill Bentley on guitar, bass and keys, Mike Vanderhule on drums and Cornell CC Carter, Angela Ashley and Angeline Bentley.”

-Bman’s Blues Report

“This quite stunningly opulent new album opens on the free wheelin’ River City and the AOR rocker Redbud Road and backs those up seamlessly with the mid-tempo pairing of both Nothing Now and What Really Matters and then we get the sweepingly beautiful, lo-fi guitar and piano ballad Lucky Stars.

Next up is one of my own personal favorites on this new album, the raucous rock ’n’ roll of Da Na Na Na Na which is in turn followed by the storytelling of Better Life, and then we get the foot-tapping melodies of the title track Out There, the rhythmic rock of Feel the Heat, with the album rounding out on the AOR of We Stayed Home, closing on the mid-tempo balladry of Now and Then.”

-Exclusive Magazine

“This SF anchor rocks out as a very credible AOR bombast singer that knows how to rock out. You could give this set a blind fold test. You would place it firmly in the 70s but you’d place it a lot closer to Y&T than you would Ted Baxter. It’s clear he knows how to make news as well as report it.”

Click Here to Listen to the Big Blend Radio Interview with Dan Ashley from October 15, 2021!

For Immediate Release – San Francisco, CA – Accomplished singer DAN ASHLEY brings a distinctive voice and his unique life experience to the Bay Area music scene with his exceptional blend of Americana and rock and roll. With the release of his remarkable new album OUT THERE on October 15, 2021, DAN ASHLEY shares in the joy, heartbreak, love, and loss that are part of our common humanity. Backed by a group of extraordinary musicians who have played and toured with an impressive list of major artists, Dan is thrilled to share his new music with his fans.

As a vocalist, DAN ASHLEY has led his highly acclaimed band for many years, headlining notable venues and opening for such great artists as REO Speedwagon, Rick Springfield, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, Patti LaBelle, Melissa Etheridge and more. He has also shared the stage with many other consummate performers over the years including Dionne Warwick, Neal Schon (Journey), Brad Gillis (Night Ranger), and multiple Grammy winner Narada Michael Walden, among many others. Dan is regularly asked to perform the National Anthem at a variety of events, including for the NBA, MLB, NCAA, and NHL.

The new DAN ASHLEY album OUT THERE is the result of a powerful collaboration with his long-time friend, music producer, and writing partner Bill Bentley. The pair worked seamlessly together with a shared vision for what the album could be. Also contributing to OUT THERE are well respected musicians such as internationally acclaimed soul artist Cornell “CC” Carter and longtime Y&T drummer Mike Vanderhule. Both were so pleased upon hearing the initial tracks for OUT THERE that they offered to contribute to the material, and as a result elevated the album to a whole new level.

From upbeat and driving rockers to gentle ballads, all with a classic Americana and rock music sensibility, listeners will find a variety of songs on this new release. The title track “Out There” is a reflection on DAN ASHLEY’S lifelong fascination with the mystery and enormity of the universe, asking a basic question: if there is other life out there somewhere, do they suffer the same challenges that we all do? Dan sings, “Out there, is there war, is there pain? Is there even much to gain by tearing each other down, like this theater in the round?” He sings about life’s formative experiences and endless summer days at his childhood home on “Redbud Road,” and salutes Americans across the country for doing what we had to do to protect ourselves and our communities from this pandemic with “We Stayed Home.” And he doesn’t forget to thank his “Lucky Stars” for the undeniable feeling of love, connection, and gratitude that comes with being with the perfect person for you, and the sense of gratefulness all of us should have for the many blessings in our lives.

DAN ASHLEY has been around music and passionate about it his entire life, starting as a child with guitar and piano lessons, and then singing in the junior choir at his church in North Carolina. Always the storyteller, Dan Ashley is also a journalist and news anchor for ABC7 – KGO Bay Area TV, and in his 35 years on television he has reported on a wide range of issues and events that affect our lives. Dan has covered stories all over the Bay Area, the country, and the world, and has received many industry awards including the prestigious DuPont Columbia Award, two Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in journalism, and numerous Emmy Awards for Best Newscast and Individual Reporting.

Dan Ashley also created the non-profit Rock the CASA Foundation to raise money through an annual concert to benefit the CASA organization and other charities, and over the years the event has featured several internationally known bands and artists. Dan is also performing alongside headliner Foghat at the Ojai Nest Fest Veterans Benefit in Ventura, CA, on October 2, 2021!

US Review: San Francisco Jazz Ensemble ANDY OSTWALD TRIO Releases their Debut Solo Record FIELD GUIDE through Digital Victrola Records ~ Available Now!

“A vet Bay area piano trio that has the sound and fury of a swinging crew that could take root best in that environment. Sassy, summer Friday after work sounds—-to hear this at that time would be the only reason we could think of for going back to the office now. There’s no question they’re tight and have it going on and you can tell they play it all on the natch. Well done.”

-Midwest Record Entertainment

Andy Ostwald is a San Francisco Bay area-based performer, teacher, and author of the book Play Jazz, Blues, Rock Piano by Ear. He performs as a band leader, sideman, solo pianist, and as a member of Jeff Sanford’s Cartoon Jazz Orchestra. Now with his own ANDY OSTWALD TRIO he is proud to present their debut full-length release FIELD GUIDE on March 18, 2022. The album is a true Field Guide for that meadow we’ve seen before but never traversed, featuring intimate and intensely focused improvised musical travels through overlooked gardens and orchards of sound. Grab a copy of the Field Guide and enjoy your trip!

Andy Ostwald has toured the US and abroad with singer Diane Witherspoon and has performed at many of the San Francisco Bay Area’s notable venues, including the SF Jazz Center, Yoshi’s Oakland & SF, Kuumbwa, and the Great American Music Hall. In 2011, Andy Ostwald began performing with fellow Bay Area musicians Ravi Abcarian (bass) and Bryan Bowman (drums), and the ANDY OSTWALD TRIO was born. They largely developed their group sound while performing at Bocce Café in the North Beach district of San Francisco, an engagement that lasted for five years until 2016. It was during this run that the musicians honed their ability to interact freely and play off one another’s musical ideas.

As a fellow member of Jeff Sanford’s Cartoon Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter Eric Wayne knew the trio and offered to help them record and release their debut album through his own Digital Victrola label. Andy was prepared with a fully formed album concept, including the title FIELD GUIDE, which allowed them to get straight to the business of finding the best material for the release. Recorded during the pandemic, resources were scarce, and it was difficult to find a studio with a worthy piano; they decided to record in Andy Ostwald’s own home with his personal piano on an 8-track HD recorder. They were able to make the most of the home studio environment, with the craftsman-style wood house giving the recording a warm and full sound.

“Since starting Digital Victrola I’ve always had a desire to record a trio album,” says Eric Wayne. “Even though I’m a trumpet player I’ve always felt that the trio format is the distilled essence of jazz and improvisatory music. Every player has to be fully committed, has to listen with their entire body and mind. It was an honor to work with such musicians under the difficulties of a pandemic and limited resources and space, but I’m very happy to have ‘my trio album’ and I hope you will enjoy listening as much as I have.”

Andy Ostwald’s father played a key role in his early musical development. “My dad made a point of introducing me to his favorite early jazz and classical recordings,” says Andy. “He would also pick up his violin and improvise melodies over the scales that I was practicing on the piano; Dad could breathe life into those scales.” By age 12 Andy began improvising over rock songs, and couple of years later he attended a clinic by jazz pianist Dan Hearle, who introduced him to recordings by three towering figures of jazz piano: Herbie Hancock, Ahmad Jamal, and Oscar Peterson. “The music these musicians created both moved and mystified me,” notes Ostwald, “and in the end, contributed to steering me in the direction of jazz.”

Ostwald received a BA in music from San Jose State University. While there he focused on performing contemporary jazz, classical compositions, and the Gamelan music of Java, and a few years later he spent a year in New York studying with renowned jazz pianist Harold Mabern. Following his stay in New York, Andy returned to his native San Francisco Bay Area to teach and play music. Soon thereafter he met singer Diane Witherspoon and became her piano accompanist. They performed locally on tour in the States, and then on several occasions in Tokyo. Currently Ostwald is a member of Jeff Sanford’s Cartoon Jazz Orchestra and freelances as both a band leader and sideman.

Andy teaches piano at his home in Oakland. He’s also an instructor at Oaktown Jazz Workshops, where Ravi Abcarian is also an instructor and the executive director. Ostwald’s book/audio series Play Jazz, Blues, Rock Piano by Ear was published by Mel Bay Publications in 2004. It remains in print today.

ALICE AUSTIN Flies Expertly Across Genres to Create a Tantalizing Listen on Her New Album GOODNIGHT EUPHORIA

Available Now! ~ San Francisco Jazz Ensemble ANDY OSTWALD TRIO Releases their Debut Solo Record FIELD GUIDE through Digital Victrola Records

The First Ever MalLabel Digital Industry Event MALCON Broadcasts TODAY March 18 @ 5pm PST! Their New MalLabel SPACE OPERA Compilation Features Some of the Best Names in West Coast Underground Bass Music

MalLabel presents MALCON, their first ever digital industry event bringing together musicians, DJs, artists, labels and music industry professionals. Broadcasting on their YouTube channel on Friday March 18, 2022, at 5pm PST / 8pm EST, MALCON will present many of the artists featured on SPACE OPERA, while also showcasing the label’s history and some upcoming new 2022 releases as well. “This highly inventive, sonically colorful new 6-track album opens on the thumpingly cinematic, glitch-hop Evil Aria from Illexxandra and then comes Cam Lasky with his DnB track which artistically drops into a fiercely unrelenting dark DnB masterpiece.

-Exclusive Magazine
