STIMULI Newsletter
Spring 2020
…hello strange new world.
STIMULI have been looking forward to returning to the Sunset Strip in Hollywoodland.
Although the promoter tells us that The Viper Room will re-open on April 1st and that our headlining show on April 24th is definitely happening, we are aware of what is taking place in the world around us. The San Diego show scheduled the night after this has already been canceled. Our Midwestern debut – Indianapolis, Cincinnati & Louisville shows in May have now been canceled as well. Our Portland, Seattle & Vancouver shows in June remain uncertain at the moment. There are tours, big plans and announcements in our camp for this year but like the rest of the world, that is all on pause now.
Contrary to what rock and roll bands typically ask of everyone, we encourage you all to stay away from one another for now. While doing so, stream our music on Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, Amazon Music and share our videos with your friends.
We appreciate you all. Be kind to each other and stay safe.

Hello from STIMULI HQ!

STIMULI recently wrapped up production of the official music video for the song ‘Ripple’ from the band’s debut album. Our friends at SoundwavesTV have just exclusively premiered the video on their new episode – watch it at the link above!

The video features a surreal, dreamscape concept loosely based around the song’s subject matter. The band had a great time creating it and are excited for you to see it!

Turn it up the volume, watch, re-watch, share with your friends and enjoy!

In live music news, Friday August 30th STIMULI played Bottom Of The Hill, our favorite San Francisco venue! The lineup at this legendary rock & roll club also featured awesome Bay Area bands Stalin & Isles.

“Stimuli is an American heavy rock band from the Bay Area of California. They formed in 2013 when Tai Hake (bass and theremin) and Jimmy Tomahawk (guitars and vocals) left the band Yeibichai. The addition of Australian drummer Cole Andrew completed the power trio format.

The tunes mostly carry a mid-tempo groove but there is enough sophistication and rhythmic changes to ensure a pretty captivating listen. It isn’t prog but it isn’t your typical radio friendly fare either. Some of the tunes have a ‘90s Alice in Chains vibe and there is a definite alternative angle to some of these tracks. Very good lead vocals is another strong plus for the band. Tomahawk has a sensitivity to his voice but can also ramp up the intensity when the need arises. Another cool trait is the use of theremin, adding mood and atmosphere to the band’s heavier riffing. The first track “+X-“ is emphasized by a massive rhythm section and the band displays tight musicianship throughout with heavy riffing and a moody guitar solo. The use of theremin is very noticeable. Some tricky drum work pushes the title track in a heavy but proggier direction and “The New Dream” has a decidedly Alice and Chains bent with lower range vocals and powerful rhythms with some pretty cool tempo changes as well. With “Sandstorm” the band throws a bit of a curveball adding sitar into the mix. The sound is more exotic because of it and is my favourite track thus far. The flute and acoustic guitar adds a sort of mysticism on “Prize Of Nothingness” that is really quite enchanting and shows a band not afraid to explore different sounds. There are really no bad tracks here which is pretty excellent in my book.

Stimuli have created a well thought out and rather sophisticated rock album with They Are We. The melodies don’t necessarily jump out at you and may require a bit of digging in on behalf of the listener. I think this one will have some staying power. A solid debut that I wholeheartedly recommend.”

Stimuli

They Are We
Record Label: Stimuli Music
Artist’s Facebook
Review by Sal Serio
August 2018

Stimuli is an appropriate name for these new Bay-area hard rockers, because this music covers so many emotions, textures, and cultural styles. These are compelling sounds, it inspires and it rocks, and also offers pause for contemplation.

‘They Are We’ is the debut release by this trio, and if you hear a Native American influence, it is no accident. Band leaders Jimmy Tomahawk and Tai Hake spice up their heavy electrified sound with traditional Native American flute and acoustic guitar, along with less traditional Theremin, synthesizers, and sitar. The end result is a pulsating intense groove not unlike the best of the more intelligent 90s-era hard rock bands, if they were also infused with a significant indigenous cultural connection.

At the end of the day it’s Tomahawk’s voice and guitar that really drives these songs, and without question there is some radio friendly material here. I only hope these guys keep their chins up,  stick out the rigors of the road, and keep plugging away at self promotion. If they can secure the right support and backing Stimuli could eventually be the next big thing.

Recommended tracks: “The New Dream”, “Sandstorm”, “Fire In Disguise”, and “Pill For The Pill”.
