US Review: DR CHRISPY “VHS”

http://annecarlini.com/ex_cd.php?id=2368

Screen Shot 2018-09-13 at 3.59.06 PM

VHS is, and I should know, having now listened to it through three times on the bounce, a wonderfully ambient, bouncy, fun, even thoughtful at times collection of instrumental tracks that Dr. Chrispy began writing way back in 2003.

It was as he was traveling for work as an aerospace engineer and if you listen carefully to the tracks, never allowing any of them to merely drift above and over and away from you, you can most definitely hear the majesty of our universe embedded within each of them.

Indeed, and furthermore, each track was written in a different location, titled with the name of a city, airport code, or local attraction, and captures the vibe of each place and moment in time.

Basically put, VHS is an auditory travel diary, inviting you along to hear and experience the evolution from Dr. Chris Boshuizen, Space Scientist, to Dr. Chrispy, the Artist.

Oh, and showcasing perfectly Dr. Chrispy’s painstaking attention to detail, there will also be released a limited first edition CD featuring a double page spread photograph shot inside the cockpit of a vintage Boeing 747 aircraft.

The disc photography lines up with the cover, and hidden behind the disc is a shout out to one of Dr. Chrispy’s greatest film influences, ‘Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’!

US Review: STIMULI “THEY ARE WE”

http://annecarlini.com/ex_cd.php?id=2338

Screen Shot 2018-09-13 at 3.48.07 PM

In April 2018, the band generated buzz when they released their debut single and music video for the album’s title track, ‘They Are We.’ The single knocks out a Hard Rock, radio-friendly sound that also exposes the introspective themes of understanding and empathy that permeates their new album.

Coming over as a cross between old school STP and a passionately raw Soundgarden, Stimuli have, and without a shadow of a doubt, come together to bring forth one of the best albums of 2018.

Not only do Stimuli masterfully rock the traditional power trio format, the band also incorporates synth atmospherics and eclectic instrumentation that is not often associated with contemporary Hard Rock.

I mean, aside from Tai Hake being a master of the bass, he also plays Theremin, which is one of the most intricate and hardest instruments to perform. If you are not aware, the Theremin is an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the thereminist (performer) and here, well, let’s just say that Hake is a master at it.

With a common thread throughout the album inclusive of moments of Native American flute, sitar, acoustic guitar and ambient synthesizers, lyrically, Stimuli’s themes possess a rare depth – insightful and meaningful, ruminating on personal experiences and reflections about peace, empathy, destiny, and self-actualization.

“Our music contains a strong emotional intensity with personal, social, and philosophical messages about the human experience,” explains guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Tomahawk. “Although there is an undeniably serious disposition in the band’s message, as individuals, we don’t take ourselves very seriously at all – satire, slapstick humor and wisecracks are the norm when we are together.”

“It’s a bit of a collective Jekyll & Hyde scenario, really. We try to remind ourselves that the initial spark of passion and the joy of playing music that caused us to pick up our instruments in the first place is why we do this!”

Recorded at Russian River Studios in Talmage, CA, all eleven songs were written by Jimmy Tomahawk and Cole Andrew, the album was produced by Jimmy Tomahawk, and it was engineered and mixed by Andrew Miller and Jimmy Tomahawk.

Exclusive Magazine Review: Unknown Hero “In My Head”

4 PANEL CD DIGIPAK

Anne Carlini writes that In My Head is “some of the finest musical storytelling I’ve heard in a long, long time.”

“For those not in the know, Unknown Hero is a musical creator on a mission. He combines his extensive musical talents, which include composition, production, keyboards, and voice, with his lifelong love of animation, heroes, and their stories to offer unique and inclusive musical and visual experiences.

With the release of his brand new album In My Head this October 13th, 2017 via his own label, Unknown Hero Music, Unknown Hero brings his fans something a little extra. For this new CD comes in a 4-panel book format with artwork by Unknown Hero featuring four of the characters from Altarz.

1. ‘Be Alright’ (featuring Kate Wild)
2. ‘Monsters In My Head’
3. ‘Her Name’
4. ‘A Minor 2125′
5. ‘Hero Beware’
6. ‘One More Day’
7. ‘Make It Happen’
8. ‘Dance’
9. ‘Keep Moving Me’
10. ‘Going For A Ride’
11. ‘Ask Me’
12. ‘Hero’s Groove’
13. ‘Close My Door’
14. ‘Be Alright’ (Instrumental)
15. ‘Monsters’ (Instrumental)

As you listen to this vibrant album, it’s important you know the genesis of it, the game plan for the tracks, as a whole, so to speak. For each track on In My Head has a place in a dystopian drama unfolding in the year 2125 on the Planet Altarz, where Lord Kraven and the UNKNOWN HERO are moving toward a showdown.

Years before, Lord Kraven abolished any practice or mention of music. But recently he has learned that a mysterious figure known only as the Uknown Hero has been depositing strange music-generating devices around the city.

A growing band of rebels are plotting ways to support his apparent mission: to give music back to the people.

Ergo, this stunning electronic album, one that blends elements of Downtempo, Trap, Dubstep, Rock, Funk, R&B, and Hip-Hop features not only a wide variety of tracks; many of which blur genre boundaries, but at the same time weave together some of the finest musical storytelling I’ve heard in a long, long time.”

Oasis Entertainment Review: Indubious “From Zero” [OUT 7/1/17]

From Zero Cover_Low Rez

“From Zero is the fourth album by Southern Oregon based reggae based band Indubious.  When I listened to this album it brought me back to my trips to Jamaica when I was in the military and seeing the great Bob Marley and other reggae bands. When I write the reviews I listen to the album without knowing anything about the band.  After this one album I was surprised that this album was not done by Jamaicans but my two Americans out of Oregon.  My favorite tracks off this album were RocketshipIf You FollowSheep of ConformityWednesday, and School Again.  If you are a fan of reggae, you need to check out this album.  This album was well written, performed and recorded and will be available on July 1, 2017 on Amazon, Itunes and in stores and online where available.”

Exclusive Magazine Review: Indubious “From Zero”

From Zero Cover_Low Rez

“Simply put, Indubious is my favorite band of 2017, and From Zero is my favorite album of 2017 – and it truly deserves to be yours too.”

“For those not in the know, the story of Indubious (who have adopted, along with their legion of fans, the motto “Live Indubiously” – which means living life without doubt or fear, and with faith in the fact that we are all here for a reason) is not for the faint of heart. Like a Phoenix rising from the flames, Indubious was forged in the fires of pain and destruction.

Indeed, it is through overcoming adversity that Evton and Skip, both brothers and band mates, have emerged as a powerful forces for change, and voices for the future of conscious music.

Having been born with Cystic Fibrosis, the Indubious brothers were given a grim diagnoses at birth with a life expectancy of 18 years. Now 30 and 32, respectively, the brothers have persevered.

Armed with impressive instrumental skill, powerful harmonies, and an electrifying stage presence, Indubious is destined to change the face of music. For me personally, I tend to listen to a new album blind to who the band is or what their story is. So listening to this new full-length album from Indubious, From Zero I found myself enraptured by the dublicious music from the very off.

More than that, From Zero is an INCREDIBLE album and one for the ages. It redefines how music should be made, encouraging genres to blend, to populate safely within their musical embrace. Simply put, Indubious (based out of Southern Oregon) is my favorite album band of 2017, From Zero my favorite album of 2017 – and it truly deserves to be yours too.

1. ‘He Who Has Ears’
2. ‘Rocketship’
3. ‘Golden Ones’ (ft. Sizzla Kalonji)
4. ‘Free Up’
5. ‘Don’t Lose Sleep’ (ft. Vaughn Benjamin)
6. ‘See Sharp’
7. ‘If You Follow’
8. ‘Sheep of Conformity’
9. ‘Wednesday’
10. ‘Perfect’
11. ‘School Again’
12. ‘Root Down’ (ft. Zahira)
13. ‘We Got Vibes’
14. ‘Sky High’

Their previous release, Wake The Lion (2013) achieved great success and reach with rankings and features throughout Beatport, iTunes, Amazon, and numerous media outlets. Produced by the legendary composer/producer Gaudi, Wake The Lion was a textural journey into the world of Rootstronica.

Here, some four years later, From Zero is a new body of work that is offered “as is” with zero expectations and zero preconceptions. Indeed, it is through the meditation of how blessed Indubious are to be able to create music and do what they do, that these songs were wholly generated.

Containing lush synths, deep bass and visionary lyricism, From Zero encompasses all that and more, and even manages to showcase a healthy evolution between the years. Blurring the lines between roots, dub, dancehall and heavy dance psychedelia, Indubious’ unique sound is, for my money, brought to the fore best on tracks such as ‘Golden Ones’ (featuring Sizzla), ‘Sheep of Conformity’ and ‘Root Down’ (featuring Zahira).

Gold leaf and Embossed print on the cover, these sleek CD collectors items are a limited edition print (500) and available for a short time. Some have also been autographed on the inside cover by Evton and Skip.”

Exclusive Magazine Review: Jennifer Saran “Wake Up”

Jennifer Saran Cover.2.1

“Narada Michael Walden’s music and Jennifer’s lyrics and vocals combine to create a soulful, heartfelt record that is, yet again, sure to captivate a worldwide audience.”

“For those not in the know, Jennifer Saran is a North American alt-pop/adult contemporary artist, songwriter and vocalist based in Hong Kong. Her first full-length album, Merry Christmas, You Are Loved (2015), was a worldwide smash and quickly put Saran on the map; let alone on the radar of some very big names within the business.

Indeed, that debut album was created with legendary producer Narada Michael Walden, and released through his very own uber successful label, Tarpan Records. Luckily for us all, that partnership continued onward with her sophomore album, Walk With Me (2016), and now into her quite stunning new album, Wake Up.

Narada Michael Walden’s music and Jennifer’s lyrics and vocals combine to create a soulful, heartfelt record that is, yet again, sure to captivate a worldwide audience. Featuring an expansive 15 tracks, Wake Up is a mix of alt-pop and adult contemporary covers and originals that allow Saran’s unique vocals styling to emanate perfectly.

1. ‘Wake Up’ (Feat. Carlos Santana, Ladysmith Black Mambazo)
2. ‘Jesus to a Child’ (Tribute to George Michael)
3. ‘Really’ (Feat. Jamil Wallis)
4. ‘Me and Mr. Jones’ (Tribute to Billy Paul)
5. ‘You Are My Star’ (Feat. Ladysmith Black Mambazo)
6. ‘Too Young to Know’
7. ‘Better Than Me’ (“To Anjali”)
8. ‘Look at Me Fly’ (Feat. Narada Michael Walden)
9. ‘Old Cape Cod’ (Tribute to Patti Page)
10. ‘Try to Forgive (But I Cannot Forget)’
11. ‘Lean on Me’ (Feat. Ladysmith Black Mambazo – Tribute to Bill Withers)
12. ‘Grace Is the Champion’
13. ‘I Will Always Be Your Home’
14. ‘My Love and Devotion’
15. ‘Aad Guray’

Musically, Wake Up is a beautifully soulful, heartfelt collection of songs that evoke Saran’s passion for beautiful melodies throughout. Indeed, Saran creates moving, thought-provoking music track after track here, and with each one drawing from her unique and powerful experiences of life, they all manage to take on her experiences musically to perfection.

Add to all that an album that also features guest appearances by multiple Grammy-winning artist Carlos Santana and South African Grammy-winning male choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and Wake Up (in stores and online worldwide on July 7th, 2017) is an album you simply must have in your collection the day it is released.

Personally, it’s Saran’s covers of some classic, beloved hit songs that resonate the most for me here. Here tributes to George Michael (‘Jesus To A Child’, Bill Withers (‘Lean on Me’), and both Patti Page (‘Old Cape Cod’) and ‘Me and Mr. Jones’ for Billy Paul, add some serious musical distinction to this album.

For a woman who records so frequently now, sings like her shoulders bear none of life’s worries, and whose recordings are engaging, uplifting and empowering via her own evolution within the business, Saran (who also has a few other external-to-music businesses she is more than a little involved with) is as beautiful, as talented, and as highly a productive lady as I think I have ever had the pleasure to know (via her music, of course). And once you listen to this new album, and journey through her back catalog yourselves, I think you’ll wholeheartedly agree with me.”

RELEASED TODAY: “One of the best albums of 2017”-Exclusive Magazine Review: Cornell CC Carter “Vindicated Soul”

814519022985

“For those not in the know, C.C. aka Cornell Carter has just released his fourth full-length album, Vindicated Soul this May 19th, 2017. A quite superb collection of 8 new tracks, the collection is a tribute to the classic Soul and R&B music he grew up with.

Known for his phenomenal stage presence, his high-powered audience engagement, and his extraordinary and dynamic vocal skills, his strong love for music ensures that once purchased Vindicated Soul will quickly become an album that you have to have in your collection of quality music.

1. ‘Intro’
2. ‘All the Way Around’
3. ‘Watching You’
4. ‘I Choose You’
5. ‘Next to You’
6. ‘Where Do We Go’
7. ‘Brother’s Gonna Work It Out’
8. ‘Look What You’ve Done for Me’

C.C.’s beautiful, absolutely spot on perfect vocal delivery on all 8 tracks showcase, without fault, his impressive vocal range. Sometimes smooth, sometimes funky, yet always engaging and infectious, the man knows his way around a mic, that’s for sure.

With his smooth soul vocal styling coming across on each track, its high praise that you cannot stop yourself from reflecting back to the days of Luther, Teddy, Ronald Isley, and for sure Al Green. Cornell’s ode to the power of Soul music, Vindicated Soul and how each song reminds us of love, respect, admiration and, most of all getting together and having a good time is, simply put, one of the best albums of 2017.”

Exclusive Magazine Review: Mark Duda “Month of Sundays”

mark duda

For those not in the know, not unlike myself, Mark Duda is an artist from New York City’s East Village who sings, plays guitar, and writes great original rock and punk songs. Over his storied career, he has worked with a who’s who of New York rock and roll royalty, and helped to carry the torch for bands and artists such as the New York Dolls, Dead Boys, and Johnny Thunders, into the 21st Century.

1. Month Of Sundays
2. Murder On Delancey
3. Standoff Love
4. Worse For Wear
5. Connection
6. Subway Song

His thunderous, raucous new six-track EP (out on April 14, 2017 via True Rock) kicks off with the Axel Rose-esque vocals (at times) of the title track, ‘Month Of Sundays’, and backs that up with both ‘Murder On Delancey’ and ‘Standoff Love.’ The guitar work from Cheetah Chrome (from The Dead Boys) along with the drums from Bobby Rondinelli (from The Handful) make ‘Murder On Delancey’ rock out even more, but in truth, the guitar work throughout all these tracks is top notch.

Personally, I love the old school E-Street feel to the saxophone opening of ‘Standoff Love’ also. Indeed, each and every one of the six cuts provides us with real rock music to listen to – not that prefabricated radio top 10 pop fluff we always seem to get.

The album, which is as much a tribute to the music and club scenes of ’70s and ’80s Lower Manhattan as it is a representation of some of the very current sounds and energy that can be found in the Big Apple, includes musician workmanship from Handful band mate Jimi K. Bones (who also co-wrote half the songs) on guitar, percussion and backing vocals; Thommy Price (from Joan Jett And The Blackhearts, Scandal) on drums; and Kenny Aaronson (from Stories) on bass.

Month Of Sundays continues ever onward with ‘Worse For Wear’, a track that slows the pace just enough to still make us aware its a rock song of sorts, then the cowbell-infused ’70s feel of the quite brilliant ‘Connection’, with the EP coming to an all-too-soon close with the folk rocker ‘Subway Song.’

Having written, or at least co-written all the songs on this brand new EP, Mark Duda is in top form on Month of Sundays. Performing songs that seamlessly blend traditional rock with elements of punk and doo wop, Duda’s vocals are raw, real, and edgy, but at no times does he over do it. He’s in control throughout and this EP is the most perfect example of a man still in love with his chosen profession.
