Indubious

Beleaf

Review by Gary Hill
I am a big fan of reggae. Indubious does a great brand of reggae, too. Their sound is well rooted in traditional elements. The thing is, they bring in some hints of progressive and space rock at the same time. The combination is unique and strong. This is a great set.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2019  Volume 6 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Here We Come
The musical arrangement early on this number is sparse and tentative. The vocals bring some killer reggae, though. As it continues this gets more intense. It is a vocal dominated piece, though. It’s a tasty introduction to the set. It’s fairly short at less than two minutes of music.
Fabric of Creation
The reggae meets rock groove on this is just so cool. There is a real progressive rock edge to it in a lot of ways. This has such a great vibe to it. It has some dropped down moments, but overall is in an energetic reggae mode.
Do the Best You Can
The fast paced vocals on this just ooze cool. The track is another killer reggae piece that works well.
Years
The vibe on this is a bit slower. It’s more of a trippy kind of number. As much as I’ve enjoyed the stuff that has come before this, in some ways the magic is really elevated here. It’s still full on reggae, but there is a bit of a space rock element in place, too.
Strong End
There is a bit more of an old-school, vintage reggae sound to this number. I love the vocal groove mid-track in particular. That said, the whole piece is classy. It lends a bit mellower edge to the proceedings.
One by One (feat. The Elovaters)
I dig this energized reggae piece. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a nice blending of modern and old-school sounds.
Here We Go
This is just a little over half-a-minute long. It’s a cool little reggae groove with some space elements at play.
Arrow
The bits of keyboard texture on this lend something closer to prog rock at times. This has a great reggae groove, too. It’s another with hints of space rock in the mix.
Frequent See
The groove on this is so classic. The sound has a real vintage reggae element at the backdrop, but the keyboard jamming over the top brings something more modern. The vocal performance is among the strongest of the set. This is one of my favorite tunes here, really. It just has such a great groove and vibe to it.
Shuffle the Deck
More of an organic reggae sound is on the menu here. This is a bit playful and traditional in terms of arrangement and delivery.
Good Ol’ Days (feat. Satsang)
There is a bit of a folk rock element at play here in some ways. Sure, it still has some definite reggae leanings, but this is not really what I would call pure reggae. It has a slower, down-home kind of feeling to it. The vocal dominated movement is so cool with multiple layers working together so well.
Hocus Focus
With a definite progressive rock edge in the mix, this reggae groove is a lot of fun.
Blessings Run
There is some great energy and reggae groove built into this cut.
Here We Are
This is a short piece that does a great job of bringing it all back around as a bookended set.

Welcome to #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In another special episode, I met one third of a group whose latest album topped the Billboard reggae chart: Evan Burton of Indubious.

Mr Topple x Indubious

Brothers Evan and Spencer Burton founded Indubious. Both were born with the illness cystic fibrosis, a systemic genetic disorder that is centred around the respiratory system but affects many parts of the body. Doctors said the brothers wouldn’t live past the age of 18. But despite these odds, Evan and Spencer knew their calling in life was both spiritual and musical, and Indubious was formed out of this. The band, which also includes Corey Foster, have forged a successful path with a string of critically acclaimed and groundbreaking albums.

But their latest release Beleaf is perhaps their seminal work. It’s a masterclass in both musical ingenuity and eclecticism, transcending genres to create a wholly unique sound. But it is also a searing and pertinent piece of conscious work. The band’s storytelling, intuitively weaved into Beleaf in effectively two ‘acts’, takes the listener on a truly moving journey. All this results in one of the albums of the year.

INDUBIOUS – BELEAF

“Indubious” is the group name for a trio of musicians from Bend, a town with around 50,000 residents in the US state of Oregon. Singer, bassist and guitarist Spencer Burton plays together with his brother, singer and keyboard player Evan Burton and drummer Corey Foster a music genre that can be described as psychedelic electronic rock with an emphasis on roots and reggae. How that sounds exactly can perhaps best be illustrated with the video added to this review of the song “Fabric Of Creation”, the first single from their recently released album “Beleaf”.

The two brothers were both born with hereditary cystic fibrosis disease, causing lungs, pancreas and liver to function poorly. The life expectancy for someone with that disease is on average around 18 years. But Evton Foster received a double lung transplant in 2011 so that he could be declared completely healed.

It is their positive attitude and their firm belief in healing and / or survival that has kept the brothers alive much longer than expected. Faith, hope and love are the building blocks for their conviction and they express that attitude especially in their music, such as on the previously released albums “Fresh Leaves” from 2008, “Cosmic Seeds” from 2009, “Wake The Lion” from 2013 and “From Zero” from 2017. Evan and Corey are both multi-instrumentalists and how well they can prove that they are already on their fifth album “Beleaf” on which they have played all the instruments that can be heard in the fourteen tracks.

Yet they have asked for some extra help for the recording of this new album, mainly guest vocalists. For example, Jackson Wetherbee from the formation “The Elovaters” sings the song “One By One”, Michael Leslie provides vocals with the song “Arrow” and Drew McManus from the formation “Satsang” sings the lead vocals with the song “Good Ol ‘Days ” All the remaining roots reggae songs on “Beleaf” were sung by Evan or Spencer himself and Evan Burton also acted as album producer.

As if they have decided to start all over again from the beginning, they put the energetic power song “Here We Come” at the front of the track list of this album. The inspiring positivism that ‘Indubious’ wants to radiate in their songs is once again dominating some of the songs on this album, such as in “Do The Best You Can”, “Blessings Run”, “Strong End” and “Shuffle The Deck”, in addition to the three songs with guest vocalists mentioned above. We wish “Indubious” (freely translated as “unsuspected”) all the best for the future and we hope that the trio will still be able to release a lot of albums, because the need for positivism in today’s world is enormous.
