Keys and Chords Review: Indubious “From Zero” (translated)

17 Aug
From Zero Cover_Low Rez
“Indubious is already on their fourth album. The brothers, ‘Skipwicked’ Spencer and ‘Evton B’ Evan Burton have furthered their musical composition skills and solidified their own reggae path. One might ask, how can two brothers with cystic fibrosis still deliver such high-quality sound? But, Indubious proves that one can also accomplish beautiful things regardless of a difficult background.
If you listen to ‘See Sharp,’ you will only hear the pure sounds. You will not hear irritated lungs, on the contrary,  you will hear pure music and vocals. Yes, this album can be labeled as reggae, but it’s more than just a Jamaican rhythm. It is beautiful in how it applies several modern layers to a classic reggae rhythm.
Indubious gets help from singers Sizzla Kalonji on ‘Golden Ones’ and Vaughn Benjamin in an immersive ‘Do not Lose Sleep’. Or Zahira’s contribution to the ingenious ‘Root Down’. These American gentlemen have played West Coast Reggae and various other festivals. With some good listening you will be able to immerse yourself in the music psychedelically and spiritually. With Indubious’ reggae-layers, one can see ‘From Zero’ as a starting point in a renewed genre.”

Eventireggae.it Review: Indubious “From Zero” (translated)

From Zero Cover_Low Rez

“From America comes a new album from Indubious, a US collective born from the idea of the brothers Evton and Skip, who have been active for several years now. It is called “From Zero” and is an important step for the Oregon group. In addition to being their fourth album, which comes a few years after “Wake The Lion,” is also the first entirely self-produced album.

A record that also recounts the particular story of these two men, born of a serious illness to whom they had little hopes of life, but miraculously led them to be one of the most important bands on the northwestern coast of the USA.

The album begins with “He Who Has Ears,” a passage from biblical texts and with a slow sound that crosses EDM and caresses the reggae, certainly more audible in “Rocketship,” a second-in-one piece dedicated to life and the vital importance it has for each of us. “Golden Ones” is the first featuring track in “From Zero” that sees the combination with Sizzla Kalonji, in a song that mixes steppes sound to electronic ones, similar to those contained in “Free Up,” inviting them to free themselves from the chains of the system.

“Do not Lose Sleep” and “Root Down” are accompanied by Vaugh Bejamin, frontman of the Akae Beka and Zahira, characterized by hypnotic choruses which give the two melodies a strong mysticism. The tones are lenses with “See Sharp,” “If You Follow” and “Perfect,” lovers tune that reflect the more soulful souls of the band while “We Got Vibes” and “Sky High” praise the carefree, always seasoned with a combination of reggae and psychedelic sounds.

From Zero is an album with a lot of different sounds, making it possible to rip the nose to the lovers of the classic roots reggae, but best representing the artistic ability and versatility of the US band.”

Sights And Sounds Of Note Review: Indubious “From Zero”

7 Aug

From Zero Cover_Low Rez

“The duo have emerged as a powerful force and voices for change as they carve out a strong following with their conscious music.”

“From the somewhere out of left field category comes Indubious (www.indubiousmusic.com) who return with their much anticipated From Zero album. Drop the figurative needle on the grooves and what emerges is a form of traditional island reggae – but surprise – the duo are Caucasians from Ashland, Oregon. Even more surprising is the pair of brothers Evton and Skip Burton were both born with Cystic Fibrosis and presented with a grim diagnoses of a life expectancy that wouldn’t exceed 18 years. However, they have persevered – and, now 30 and 32 respectively – when they sing about mercy and spiritual matters you know it’s coming from an authentic place. In these hard times the duo have emerged as a powerful force and voices for change as they carve out a strong following with their conscious music. Together with their base of loyal fans, affectionately called “Indubians”, they have achieved worldwide acclaim as the originators and ambassadors of the Rootstronica genre (a high energy blend of Reggae, Rock and EDM). The album opens with a memorable one-two punch of “He Who Has Ears” and “Rocketship” that is sure to gain Indubious many more listeners as they soar to new heights that are set to take them – as the album closer says with horns and a sultry groove – “Sky High”.

Check Out Indubious’ Interview with Anne Pick from Source Weekly

“Indubious releases its 4th album, “From Zero,” focusing on gratitude; not expectation.

Usually for these interviews, I call a musician and we chat on the phone. I hear bits and pieces of where they are and what they’re doing, be it in a crowded van cruising down the highway or in the peaceful recluse of their own homes. But what I really love is talking to musicians in person—which I did recently with Evton Burton from the rock-reggae band Indubious. I got to see his extroverted personality and his hand gestures, before we got sidetracked talking about Bend neighborhoods and growth.

The day after, he sent me an email with exciting news: Indubious’ new album, “From Zero,” had landed at number six on the Billboard reggae charts, ranking it among the likes of Ziggy Marley, The Expendables and Major Lazer. That’s big news.

“The whole philosophy around it is, it’s coming from this ‘from zero’ mentality,” Burton says of the album’s themes. “It’s that we all came from nothing, we were popped into this planet out of nothing and we’re entitled to nothing. When you’re entitled to nothing, essentially everything that you receive is a blessing. It’s centering in the heart of gratitude and not expectation.”

Burton, who calls Bend home, started Indubious with his brother, Skip Burton, who currently lives in Portland. In order to understand their “from zero” mentality, it may be helpful to note that both brothers were born with Cystic Fibrosis. The brothers came into this world with a grim life expectancy of 18 years. Now, in their early 30s, they persevere. Evton received a double lung transplant in 2011, making a full recovery.

“It’s really shaped who we are because it’s caused us to drop more into our purpose as opposed to living how most people live, which is caught in the drama of society of money and petty things,” Burton says. “It’s when you’re faced with your own mortality, you go, ok, what’s real here? What are we doing? What are we here to do? So from a very young age, we started on that mentality.”

For “From Zero,” the brothers blend rock, reggae and EDM to create what they call “Rootstronica.” But genre doesn’t mean much. The brothers try to transcend genre and create what feels good. With no pretense, the album dips into poppy realms and R&B, simply because that’s where they feel comfortable.

“I think genres are interesting, tricky things; they aren’t really my favorite thing,” Burton says. “I think music is a representation of our spirit and our spirit is vast.”

Indubious releases “From Zero” at the Domino Room Saturday. The brothers love performing live; Burton speaks of the energy exchange that happens between the band and the audience. Performing live allows the floodgates to open, so to speak, pouring everything out, conveying their message.

“There’s a certain magic that happens sometimes while performing, where you’re well practiced enough that you can put your intellect to the back of your mind and allow the feeling to come through,” Burton says. “You can channel things. Things come through. It’s like this peak mystical experience where everyone is involved in this thing as it’s happening. The energy plays back and forth off everyone in the room — it’s a spiritual thing.””
