SoulandJazzandFunk Review: Cornell “CC” Carter “That Feelin'” Single

Screen Shot 2018-04-18 at 1.30.03 PM

For the past few years San Francisco’s CORNELL CARTER (who sometimes just works using his initials “C.C.”) had made himself plenty of friends in the soul community. The one time top session singer (he’s worked with people like Ray Charles, James Brown, The Whispers, The Temptations, Natalie Cole, Kool and the Gang and most recently Narada Michael Walden) really took off with his long player ‘In The Moment’ from which a series of well-crafted singles and their remixes scaled the credible soul charts.

The good news is that CC is putting the finishing touches to a new album – ‘One Love’ – due June/July. Cornell says it’s his homage to the world of classic soul, R&B and jazz, but in the meantime there’s a new single on the way. ‘That Feelin” will be the album’s lead track and though it’s not officially available till April 27th, previews reveal a tasty, insistent modern soul beater. Cornell is in great vocal form (remember, the man has pedigree!) and the vibe and groove are bob on…. so they should be! The tune was co-written and produced by UK muso Morgan Howell, better known, of course, as ‘Soulpersona’…. and if anyone knows the modern soul groove, then it’s Morgan H! It’s all looking good for that new long player!

Music Street Journal Track-by-Track Review: Cornell CC Carter “Vindicated Soul”

814519022985

“If you find yourself longing for the classic soul music of the 1970s, you will probably feel at home here. It’s obvious that Cornell CC Carter shares that feeling to a large degree. You can tell it in the dedications on the disc, but even more so you can feel it, and hear it, in the music. This is very much in keeping with the classic soul music era. If you dig that kind of stuff, you will like this. It’s both classic and classy.

Track by Track Review

Intro: This short (less than a minute and a half) piece is built on some definite old school soul sounds. Of course, it’s dedicated to a number of the legends of that musical style, and they are called out by name here. This is classic sounding stuff.

All the Way Around: More killer old school soul is on the menu here. The cut feels like something that could have been released in the 1970s.

Watching You: Perhaps the keyboard sounds on this bring into a bit more modern place. That said, this is still something that feels like it would have fit into the 1970s. There is a funk, almost disco, sound to this number. I love the funk breakdown on this piece.

I Choose You: I dig this one a lot, too. It’s another classic soul sounding tune. It loses that disco/funk element that we heard on the last one. This doesn’t lose that 1970s vibe, though.

Next to You: There is a healthy helping of electronic fusion built into this one. It’s a classy cut that brings back some of that funky thing. Still, it’s a retro slab of cool. This might have the best vocal arrangement of the whole disc.

Where Do We Go (Boogie Back Remix): Now, this cool cut makes me think of Marvin Gaye quite a bit. It has some definite funk and more modern elements built into it, too. This is one of my favorites on the whole disc, really. It’s just so classy.

Brother’s Gonna Work It Out: With a lot of funk, this has a much more modern sound. This feels closely tied to modern soul music. That said, it clearly has ties to the retro elements, too. While this is a fun cut, it’s not up to the same level as the previous pieces.

Look What You’ve Done for Me: This is an energized soul number with both modern and classic sounds at its heart.”

Let It Rock Review: Cornell CC Carter “Vindicated Soul”

814519022985

“Back to the well of inspiration, San Fran soulster takes time-tested classics for a new spin…there’s a true vindication of largely forgotten gems.”

“Unpredictability may not be your typical R&B artist trait, but Cornell Carter doesn’t dwell on a carpe diem disposition of “In The Moment”and looks back to move forward. A covers collection, “Vindicated Soul” is a snapshot of the singer’s adventures in deep cuts perfectly capturing the spirit of mid-’70s Motor City music, yet there’s a contemporary shimmer on these timeless tracks.

Without muddling it in a melismatic manner, CC concentrates on emotional expression that’s stripped of sentimental tinsel and is sincere enough to seep into the listener’s psyche, and his take on “How Can I Get Next To You” could challenge CHAPTER 8’s original in enchanting stakes, whereas Willie Hutch’s “Brother’s Gonna Work It Out” and SLAVE’s “Watching You” open a street-smart perspective to Carter’s cinematic delivery of tribal funk. Name-checking his heroes in short intro, Cornell creates a concept of sorts and allows the songs’ flow to carefully carry their message, from the silky “All The Way Around” to “Look What You’ve Done For Me” in a way Messrs Gaye and Green would approve of: with a grain of grit rubbing against seductive vocals.

CC might be a tad too respectful to the source sometimes, yet he totally appropriates it, that’s why there’s a true vindication of the largely forgotten gems.”

Music in Belgium Review: Cornell CC Carter “Vindicated Soul” (translated)

814519022985

“As the title of the album suggests, we are immersed in the atmosphere of soul music, with an American artist who takes great standards of the genre by traveling between neo-soul, R & B, disco and fresh- Contemporary jazz. Recorded in various studios in San Francisco, Cornell CC Carter, who started his career in 1996 and who was awarded the UK Bright Award twenty years later , pays tribute to the illustrious musicians and composers of soul, funk and even gospel. Proposed in a more contemporary remix while respecting the spirit of all these great black American currents and artists, the songs refer to icons such as Marvin Gaye , Leon Ware , Willie Hutch or Al Green , not to mention a Barry White intro .

Accompanied by international musicians such as Meleccio Magdaluyo (saxophone), Niecey Robinson (chorus), Ernest McKone (organ and keyboards ) and Kirk “KC” Crumpher (drums, bass, organ and keyboards ), Cornell offers a collection of songs Rhythm and vocals are of course essential to transcribe the soul or funky spirit. Starting from fathers like James Brown or Ray Charles , he sprinkles his work from the ” The atmosphere of formations like The Temptations or Kool and The Gang , not to mention Natalie Cole or even Michael Jackson .

Having finally worked with such luminaries as Neil Schon (Journey) or Dionne Warwick , he is also joining the services of the great Carlos Santana , in an album where he proves his great professionalism and great vocal abilities. Concerning the transmission of the timeless spirit of these great musical movements (soul music, funk or jazz), Cornel CC Carter fulfilled his task of offering to all those who love these tempos hot and chaloupés, By producing a collection that is both faithful and modernist, which transpires the imprint of all the great artists mentioned in this chronicle.”

SoulWalking Review: Cornell CC Carter “Vindicated Soul”

814519022985

Cornell C.C. Carter, might best be described as an artist with ‘old school sensibilities’. ‘Vindicated Soul’ was released on the 19th of May, on this San Francisco based singers own label. I think, all told, that C.C. and many Soul Music fans have very similar tastes in music. For instance, one of my absolute favourite Marvin Gaye songs, ‘All The Way Around’, is featured here in a beautiful re-interpretation, which takes nothing away from the brilliant original, but carefully relocates the song into 2017. Leon Ware must have kicked himself, when he handed over that album to Marvin, however, the finished product marked a superb addition to both of the late men’s C.V.’s. Cornel rework’s two Willie Hutch compositions, namely ‘Brother’s Gonna Work It Out’ and ‘I Choose You’, very competently, and I was delighted to hear an old Chapter 8 tune, which I don’t think I have ever heard, covered by an artist, in the form of ‘How Can I Get Next To You’ (penned by the late Patrick Moten). That was originally featured on the group’s ‘This Love Is For Real’ album back in 1985. There are further covers of an Al Green tune (‘Look What You Done for Me’), along with some Cornel originals, including the fine ‘Where Do We Go’, which I featured in the site chart a few months ago. Musically, the line-up features Melecio Magdaluyo (from the Pete Escovedo Orchestra), along with the U.K.’s very own Ernie McKone (brother of Vivienne). A very worthy release indeed, and a very welcome choice of material as well. Highly recommended.”

Internationally Acclaimed R&B Artist CORNELL “CC” CARTER To Release VINDICATED SOUL, A Remarkable Set Of Soul Covers With A Classic CC Original Remix

814519022985.jpg

For Immediate Release – San Francisco, CA – CORNELL “CC” CARTER will release his new album VINDICATED SOUL in stores and online worldwide on May 19, 2017. CC has been gracing stages and entertaining thousands of fans with his signature sound around the world for many years, and this new seven-song album is a tribute to the classic Soul and R&B music he grew up with. CC is known for his phenomenal stage presence, his high-powered audience engagement, and his extraordinary and dynamic vocal skills. His strong love for music developed when he was a young man growing up in a San Francisco home chock full of Jazz, Blues, Funk, Soul, and Gospel, which drove CC to create a musical gumbo made from ingredients from each of these strong influences.

CC says, “VINDICATED SOUL is the soundtrack of my life, which is why these songs were chosen.” The Intro track that kicks things off is a dedication to the genius of Curtis Mayfield’s “Super Fly” soundtrack, followed by the Marvin Gaye classic “All the Way Around,” written by the legendary Leon Ware. “Brothers Gonna Work It Out” and “I Choose You,” by Willie Hutch from the soundtrack of the 1973 film The Mack, are two songs that had an impact on CC at an early age. “Next to You” is a song by the group Chapter 8, which many do not realize was the backup band for the renowned Anita Baker, and CC picked Al Green’s “Look What You Done for Me” because “it is a history lesson of what Soul really is.” This remarkable collection of covers includes a classic remix of the CC original track, “Where Do We Go” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NNT7rrkE-k). Digital copies of the album will also feature the bonus track “Zoom (Fly Away Mix).”

VINDICATED SOUL was recorded at various studios in San Francisco and mastered at Trakworx. World-class players featured on the album include Melecio Magdaluyo (Pete Escovedo Orchestra – Saxophone), Niecey Robinson (Legends of Soul – Background Vocals), Ernest McKone (UK – Bass and Keys), and Kirk “KC” Crumpler (Drums, Bass, Keys). All songs were recorded with live instruments, not an easy task, but essential for the authentic sound they were able to produce.

CC was most inspired to do this album by his family, which he has always regarded his most important asset. “My Mom was the key,” says CC. “She used music to bond us, and I’m making sure I carry the torch that was handed to me.” CC received big advice from his musical brother Narada Michael Walden, who shared with him that the key to covering a great song is to “Stay true to it because of its greatness!”

CC’s first album Let’s Go Back, recorded in 1996, has recently become a classic R&B collector’s item exclusively in Japan. Following the release of his internationally acclaimed 2016 release In The Moment, CC received the UK Bright Star Award for Best Male Artist of 2016, and has gone on to put out several remixes which have received great acclaim in the US and Europe. Radio and media support for CC has come from some major players, and stations that have supported CC with High Rotation include Jazz FMMi SoulBBC RadioStarpoint Radio (UK Soul Charts)Solar Radio, Delite, Soulpower, JFS, Soultrain, Unity, Soundfusion, Time Radio, and Teerex Radio in Canada. Steve Ripley and the Soulfood Music PR team has been a major asset for his introduction and success in the UK and Europe.

CC has had many once in a lifetime musical experiences to draw from, but two of the highest points of his career so far has been sharing the stage as an opening act for the late great Godfather of Soul, James Brown, and the legendary Ray Charles. In addition to his various headline performances, CC has also opened for other household name brand artists such as The WhispersThe TemptationsNatalie Cole, and Kool and The Gang. As part of Narada Michael Walden’s all-star band, which performs at various NMW Foundation events, CC has shared the stage with other renowned world-class artists such as Neil Schon (Journey) and Dionne Warwick.

Throughout the years, CC has appeared on many albums, and he continues to be one of the most in-demand session vocalists in the San Francisco Bay Area. CC was honored to perform with world-renowned, multi-Platinum Guitarist Carlos Santana, providing background vocals on two tracks that appear on Santana IV, a reunion album released in 2016. His experience and professionalism have made him an A-list background vocalist for Tarpan Studios, appearing on tracks from Grammy and Emmy Award Winning Producer Narada Michael Walden’s new album EVOLUTIONJennifer Saran’s new albums Merry Christmas, You Are Loved and Walk With Me, and the Jordan Hurwitz album LOVESICK., all released in 2016.
