Like many contemporary soul singers California-born Cornell Carter seems to get more love and respect from the UK and European soul fraternity than he does in his homeland. In the States, CC is known as a top session singer – he’s graced records and live performances with people like Ray Charles, James Brown, The Whispers, The Temptations, Natalie Cole, Kool and the Gang and most recently Narada Michael Walden. A few years back he decided the time was right to go his own solo route and two albums (‘In The Moment’ and ‘Vindicated Soul’) and a slew of fine singles seemed to justify his decision. The albums and the singles (especially in their various remixes) did moderately well Stateside but in the UK and Europe they topped all the credible soul charts. Little wonder, then, that this – Cornell’s newest collection has been one of the most eagerly anticipated sets of the year. Two mighty fine singles from the album cranked up the expectation. First there was ‘That Feelin” – a classic and chart-topping modern soul groove; then came ‘That’s My Baby’ – another mini masterpiece. Both tunes, by the way, were produced by Soulpersonna (Morgan Howell) and served as tasty hors d’oeuvres for the album.

Those two songs sit centrepiece on the 12 track LP that is ‘One Love’ but the good news is that there are plenty more cuts to rival those new classics. Be assured ‘One Love’ is no one trick pony (or in this case “two trick”!)

For the rug cutters there’s plenty to please….’Winners’, ‘Relax’ and the two mixes of ‘Something Like’ will fill any modern soul room floor. Ditto the pacier ‘Badeyah’ – a treat for the soulful house crew too, this one.

Fancy some down time…. try the gentle ‘Free’ and the soporific ‘Maybe’, while in between tempos there are the lovely ‘Life’ and the homage to Bob Marley that is the LP’s title cut.

In truth, ‘One Love’ is crammed with great, proper, “old fashioned” soul songs and CC’s time in the studio working with some of the biz’s biggest names has taught him a lot about presentation and production; then, of course, there’s THAT voice – a beautiful instrument (don’t take my word…. why would all those big names have used him?) that delivers every time.

This album opens with a concise spoken intro/tribute from BBC radio presenter John Leech. He opines that that CC Carter has “raised the bar” for modern soul with his “textured music” that “cascades and flows beautifully“. Bob on Mr Leech! We agree! We’re also confident that he’ll agree that ‘One Love’ is one of 2018’s very best and as the year draws on, few will albums will match it.

Soul and Jazz and Funk Review: Cornell CC Carter “Vindicated Soul”

814519022985

“CORNELL CARTER, who sometimes just works using his initials “C.C.”, is a top session singer working in and around San Francisco. His CV boasts work with people like Ray Charles, James Brown, The Whispers, The Temptations, Natalie Cole, Kool and the Gang and most recently Narada Michael Walden. Indeed Cornell worked closely with Walden on his last album – the wonderful but sadly neglected ‘Evolution’.

Early last year Mr Carter stepped out of the shadows to release his own album – ‘In The Moment’. It was his third solo set and it brought him to a bigger, more appreciative audience who enjoyed his classy covers of ‘La La Means I Love You’ and ‘Zoom’. Then over the year a series of clever, catchy remixes of other key cuts saw C. C win the hearts of the UK and European modern soul community. The Boogie Back Remix of ‘Where Do We Go’ was particularly well-received.

And guess what? That very remix takes pride of place on Cornell’s latest release – an 8 track mini album… not quite an LP but longer than an EP! The little collection’s called ‘Soul Vindicated’ and the singer calls it “the soundtrack to my life”. Essentially the disc is Cornell’s tribute to his heroes … Willie Hutch, Steve Arrington and Slave, Anita Baker and Chapter 8, Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. (Their pics adorn the inner sleeve, by the way). And it’s a Curtis thing that kicks things off – an intro jam that’s a Mayfield (circa ‘Superfly’) mash up.

Then there are great takes on Marvin’s Leon Ware-penned ‘All The Way Round’, Willie Hutch’s ‘Brothers Gonna Work It Out’ and ‘I Choose You’, Slave’s ‘Watching You’, Al Green’s ‘Look What You Done’ and Chapter 8’s ‘Next To You’. That leaves Cornell’s own ‘Where Do We Go’ and, you know, it doesn’t sound out of place in such august company!

This is a lovely, proper, little soul collection and if you enjoyed Cornell’s ‘In The Moment’ from last year, this comes highly recommended. Find out more @ www.cc2000music.com

Soul and Jazz and Funk Review: Omeri “Day Dream’n”

omeri-coverimage-hd-copy

“‘Day Dream’N’ is the debut album from Buffalo-based singer/songwriter OMERI (Monroe). The set features 8 tracks but two are edits of already featured songs, so the album’s more of an EP than an LP!

Musically, Omeri’s sound veers to the poppier end of the soul spectrum. The set’s tile cut is the standout (it’s one of the songs that comes in two versions). ‘One Night’ (the other song to which we’re treated to two versions) is the album’s big ballad while ‘Don’t Look For me’ gives Omeri the chance to show off his vocal range. SoulandJazzandFunk Review: E-Life 7 “Miked Up”

e-life-7-coverimage-hd-copy

‘Miked Up’ is the debut album from New York jazz outfit, E-LIFE 7. The driving force behind the band is the pairing of bassist Mike Pennick and guitarist Ron Walker. The duo worked together in an R&B combo, The Exoutics, but after exhausting that band’s possibilities, they decided to explore their love of jazz. To help them deliver they recruited keyboardists Rodney Spears and Charlie Crymes Jr. percussionist Tim Webb and drummer Ron Walker and they then set about recording their debut album, ‘Miked Up’ which is set for late March release on Three 2 Go Music.

The 14 tracker is a funky take on smooth jazz and Pennick is clearly the main man. It’s his throbbing bass lines that dominate the album… indeed he gets special billing on the credits. All the tunes save one are band originated. The only cover is a respectful take on Stevie Wonder’s ‘That Girl’ – always sounds good.

Helping E-Life 7 flesh out their sound are sax man Ken Whitman, two more keyboardists Walter Kemp III and Van Taylor and vocalists Joey Diggs and Dee Osborne.

And that name, E-Life 7? Well depending on who you believe, it’s either ‘Exoutics For Life’ or ‘Enjoy Life 7 Days A Week’.

Miked Up is scheduled to be released on March 24, 2017 through Three 2 Go Music.
